Should You Buy The LeapFrog LeapPad Explorer For Your Child?

If you’ve previously bought the Leapster Explorer then you’ll be pleased to know that anything you’ve bought for that system will also work on the LeapPad Explorer. This is perfect either if you’re upgrading, or you have one child with a Leapster and one with a LeapPad – they can share their games.

This is a system designed to grow with your child, helping to make it a more valuable investment. LeapFrog recommend the toy for ages four to nine, and each game or activity comes in a variety of difficulty levels to suit their understanding. Depending on your child’s progression, the skill levels automatically adjust for best results.

One downside is the fact that there are relatively few games included with the LeapPad as standard (you have to pay extra if you want to buy more cartridges). With an RRP of around $100, this makes it more expensive than handheld electronic learning tools you may be used to, and some parents might have hoped for a larger number of games. However, bear in mind that you are getting more for your money in what the device can do, especially with the video recorder.

Although the device is easy to use, and could be used by kids younger than four if you think they’re ready, it’s also challenging enough to grow with your children. It manages to keep them engaged, which we all know is not an easy task!

Lastly, the design is kid-friendly. It’s able to withstand drops, dirt, and bumps. This is vital for any expensive toy you might be thinking of buying for your little ones! And, thankfully, you’ll save on operation now that this LeapPad device accepts rechargeable batteries.

In short, the LeapPad Explorer is a solid choice of toy for your child. The main drawback is its cost, though it’s still relatively affordable if you’re looking for an impressive Christmas gift, or already own some Leapster games cartridges.

What Some Customers Have Commented About This Learning System

Bizeebee,

Received this a few days ago. Got it for my daughter who is 3. She LOVES it!!! In fact, my near 6 year old wants one now too. The uploads aren’t free, but what in life is anymore. I think $7-10 is reasonable for a downloaded game. The Leappad already comes with a few game downloads to start out with. We also have the Leapster Explorer which my daughter got a year ago, she loves that as well, and the games from the Explorer work on the Leappad. A total BONUS! I am a bit concerned about how it will hold up over time, but am planning on purchasing the protective cover for it once it is available. Overall, a great learning toy that is both educational and fun. So much more useful compared with a DS which is only gaming.

A. Sinha,

I think this is a winner! Since getting an iPad2 and having to share it with DD, I’ve been looking for something that would be similar for just her to use. Voila Leapfrog saves the day with this fantastic new leappad. It is fully loaded with a still camera, video camera, microphone, durable shell and large, brilliant screen. The download on Mac for Leapfrog Connect was quick and easy (5 minutes.) Upload of new update and 1 free app was about 10 minutes. A lot of people are saying they wish this had wifi, so let me tell you why I am happy it does Not have wifi. WiFi could be accessed by outside sources, if you are in a public place you wouldn’t want someone to be able to access your child’s LeapPad’s photos, videos and name that is on it.
